Empowered to Empower (Elsa Laddit of Sitio Kinaragan, Brgy. Duale, Limay, Bataan)

Elsa is a simple wife and mom to 4 children. She belongs to a particular tribe of Aeta called Magbukon situated in Sitio Kinaragan of the municipality of Limay, Bataan. She was trained by MAP as a Sitio Health Worker. Now, she can confidently assess her neighbors whenever they come to her for check-up which she could refer to their Health Center. She was also recognized by the Barangay Health Workers and work with them in BP monitoring and other activities for the community.

I remember when she was not yet an SHW. She lived a very simple life. Being a housewife, she would be normally busy with her chores and kids, sometimes helping her husband as well in their small farm. She was timid and to a point, felt inferior, maybe brought by the culture or perhaps the non-Aeta (Tagalog) people around them.

When MAP came to conduct training in Primary Health Care, Elsa hesitated to join thinking that she won’t be able to learn well since she did not finish schooling. But with the help and constant nudging of Ate Esther (her former teacher), Elsa gained confidence to attend the training.

After finishing the training, Elsa happily shared that she have conquered her timidity and realized her self-worth when her neighbors started coming up to her for health assessment. She added that though it is hard to fulfill the role of an SHW, it comforts her to know that she is able to help her community which she believes God commands us to do.

Elsa thoughtfully concluded, “The most important thing that I’ve learned is that I and my family are precious in the eyes of God and He has a beautiful plan for my life. I thank MAP for that. (isang pinakaimportanteng bagay ang malaman na ako at ang aking pamilya ay espesyal sa Diyos at malaman ang magandang plano niya sa buhay ko. salamat sa MAP.)
